Project Ilakaka

Welcome to >Project Ilakaka

>Project Ilakaka gives jewellers the chance to support and engage with the people in their supply chain.

Join us and help make a difference for sapphire mining community in Ilakaka.

Ilakaka holds one of the world’s largest sapphire deposits. It should be prosperous, but it isn’t. Why? Because too many profits move up the supply chain – and too few stay in Madagascar.

Through >Project Ilakaka, we’re giving jewellers a chance to directly support the mining community in Ilakaka, by building wells, distributing medicines and supporting children’s education.

How we make a difference

The water of life

We’re taking a three-step approach in Ilakaka, focusing on basic necessities while also helping the local community educate and thrive. We call it support, sustain and empower.

A cut above

Madagascan sapphires sell for hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. But the miners in Ilakaka make just $3 a day. Our long-term goal is to give the local community the skills needed to make jewellery products locally – so they can take control of their own natural resources.

Our team

We are a small NGO and group of friends who believe in the power of many. We are not backed by a big institution or company. But we believe we can drive long-term change – with your support.
